Course Overview
There is no separate taught Yachtmaster course within the RYA Sail Cruising scheme. This intensive programme combines five days of tailored preparation with a practical Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore examination conducted by an independent RYA examiner.
Preparation is candidate-led rather than a fixed syllabus recap. Your instructor identifies weaknesses and refines the boat handling, sail handling, pilotage, navigation, passage planning, command and crew-management skills that must already be at examination standard.
Phuket and the Andaman Sea provide a demanding, varied training ground with tidal planning, traffic, anchorages, confined-water manoeuvring and day-and-night pilotage. The exact programme is shaped by the candidates, forecast, sea state and examiner arrangements.
Sailing conditions
Phuket offers year-round tropical sailing. The northeast-monsoon months are generally drier, while the southwest monsoon can bring fresher winds, tropical showers and larger swell on exposed Andaman routes. Phang Nga Bay provides more sheltered water, allowing the instructor to select suitable training areas for the day’s conditions.
Places to explore
Depending on weather and training objectives, the cruising area can include limestone anchorages in Phang Nga Bay, islands near Phuket and, on suitable passages, the Phi Phi Islands. The final route is always set by the instructor and is not a fixed holiday itinerary.
Who Is This Course For?
Experienced skippers who already meet the published eligibility requirements for Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore and want focused preparation before presenting themselves for an independent practical examination. This is not a beginner or mile-building course.
Prerequisites
- Yachtmaster Coastal: 30 days at sea, 2 days as skipper, 800 nautical miles and 12 night hours; minimum exam age 17
- Yachtmaster Offshore: 50 days at sea, 5 days as skipper and 2,500 nautical miles
- Offshore candidates: 5 passages over 60 nautical miles, including 2 overnight and 2 as skipper; minimum exam age 18
- At least half the qualifying sea time should be gained in tidal waters; qualifying experience must meet the current RYA recency, vessel and discipline rules
- Navigation knowledge to RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory shorebased standard
- Marine Radio SRC or higher GMDSS certificate, a valid accepted first-aid certificate and photographic ID
Before booking, send us your sailing CV or logbook summary, intended exam level and supporting certificates. We will review eligibility and examiner availability. If you still need qualifying passages or command experience, complete an appropriate Mile Builder first.

Flights and Arrival
Phuket International Airport is approximately 20–30 minutes by road from Yacht Haven Marina in normal traffic. Plan to arrive with enough time for Sunday-evening boarding. Airport transfer and accommodation before or after the course can be arranged separately.
Typical Weather
Phuket is warm throughout the year, but the monsoon seasons influence wind, rainfall and route planning. These are typical patterns rather than a forecast.
Nov–Jan
24–31°C
Drier northeast-monsoon period with more sunshine and generally comfortable cruising conditions.
Feb–Apr
25–33°C
Hot, mostly dry weather. Winds can become lighter and more variable as the season progresses.
May–Aug
24–32°C
Southwest-monsoon sailing with tropical showers, fresher winds and more swell on exposed routes.
Sep–Oct
24–31°C
Typically the wettest and most changeable period, with squalls and routes adjusted to conditions.
Your Next RYA Step
After passing, continue building experience or progress toward Yachtmaster Ocean. Candidates intending to work professionally can complete PPR, the required medical and sea-survival pathway, then apply to the RYA for a Commercial Endorsement.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Yachtmaster preparation and the exam?
The first five days are focused preparation with an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor, tailored to the candidates' existing strengths and weaknesses. The instructor then leaves the assessment role, and an independent RYA examiner conducts the practical examination. Preparation is highly recommended but does not guarantee a pass.
What is the difference between Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore?
Both examinations assess skippering, boat handling, seamanship, navigation, safety, collision regulations, meteorology and signals. Yachtmaster Offshore requires substantially more qualifying experience and a higher standard of command for longer passages. Current RYA minimum sea time and age requirements determine which examination you may enter.
What evidence of sea time should I provide?
Bring your RYA logbook or a clear written record showing dates, vessel names and types, routes, miles, days aboard, night hours, role onboard and qualifying passages as skipper. Experience must meet the current RYA rules for recency, vessel suitability, exam discipline and tidal sea time. Send us a summary before booking so eligibility can be reviewed.
Are theory, Marine Radio and First Aid assessed or taught during the week?
Theory is tested and refreshed, not taught from the beginning. You should arrive with navigation knowledge to Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory standard and hold the required Marine Radio and valid accepted First Aid certificates. The examiner may question any relevant part of the Yachtmaster syllabus, including passage planning, COLREGS, meteorology, buoyage, signals and safety.
What should I expect during the independent exam?
Expect practical tasks by day and potentially at night, including skippering, close-quarters handling, sailing ability, pilotage, navigation, emergency situations, leadership and theoretical questioning. The examiner sets the programme according to candidates, conditions and the yacht. The exam may finish earlier or later than the indicative schedule, so avoid tight onward travel plans.
What happens if I am not ready or do not pass?
If preparation reveals a significant gap, we may recommend postponing the examination rather than presenting prematurely, subject to examiner and booking arrangements. If the required standard is not demonstrated, the examiner explains the outcome and areas for improvement. You can then complete targeted training, build further experience and arrange another examination later.
