Phuket and the Andaman Sea

Local sailing weather

Phuket can be sailed year-round. The season changes the wind, swell, rain and route—not the value of training in real tropical conditions.

November–February

Northeast monsoon

Generally drier weather, comfortable temperatures and popular cruising conditions. Winds are often moderate, although local effects and stronger periods still occur.

March–April

Hot transition

Hotter, often lighter conditions with sea breezes, isolated thunderstorms and excellent opportunities for skills work when passage plans remain flexible.

May–September

Southwest monsoon

Fresher prevailing winds, tropical showers and more swell on exposed west-coast passages. Sheltered eastern waters can still provide valuable year-round sailing.

October

Changing season

A transition toward the drier northeast flow. Forecasts can remain changeable, rewarding conservative routing and close attention to squalls and sea state.

Weather shapes the training

Instructors adapt passages, anchorages and exercises to the forecast and crew. A change of route is normal seamanship, not a reduced experience. Tropical squalls, sea breezes and sheltered passages provide useful lessons in preparation and judgement.

Tides and local effects

Tidal streams matter around headlands, channels and marina approaches. Phuket’s tidal waters support meaningful navigation and pilotage practice, including the experience expected as sailors progress toward advanced RYA qualifications.

Use current marine information

This page provides seasonal context, not a live navigation forecast. Always use current official warnings, a suitable marine forecast, onboard observations and the skipper’s judgement.
