Our practical courses leave the marina and normally remain at sea until the final day, turning each week into a genuine cruising journey. Weather and sailing seasons

Phuket is sailable throughout the year, with each season offering a different training experience. November to April is generally more settled on the Andaman coast; November to February is usually cooler, while March to May becomes hotter. From roughly mid-May to mid-October, the southwest monsoon brings more humidity, frequent rain, fast-moving squalls and periods of stronger wind and sea. Courses can still operate, but routes, anchorages and daily plans remain subject to the instructor's assessment of the conditions.

Tides and tidal streams

Phuket has a regular semidiurnal tidal pattern, normally producing two high and two low waters during a lunar day. Heights and stream timing vary by location, creating valuable practice in tidal planning and pilotage. RYA Yachtmaster candidates must build substantial qualifying experience, including experience in tidal waters. Phuket and the Andaman Sea provide natural conditions in which to develop and apply those skills as part of a wider training pathway.

Scenery and cruising variety

Close to our base, Phang Nga Bay offers sheltered water, limestone karsts, caves, channels and protected anchorages—including Ko Tapu, widely known as James Bond Island after appearing in The Man with the Golden Gun. Longer passages lead toward Krabi, Phi Phi and Maya Bay, made internationally famous by The Beach, as well as Racha and the southern islands. The contrast creates a memorable journey and a remarkably varied training ground.

Practical sailing tips

Keep plans flexible and use current forecasts, tide tables and local information. Tropical squalls can develop quickly, while strong sun and heat make hydration and sun protection essential. The experience ashore is equally memorable: routes may include fishing communities and island villages where crews can enjoy fresh seafood, southern Thai curries and welcoming local hospitality. At Phuket Yacht Haven, manoeuvre in slack water where possible and contact the marina on VHF Channel 68 for current arrival guidance.
