Course Overview

The RYA Yachtmaster Fast Track is an intensive 15-week pathway for committed beginners and developing sailors who want to build the knowledge, practical ability and qualifying sea time needed to progress towards the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore examination. It is a complete development programme rather than a guaranteed examination pass.

Students should complete the RYA Day Skipper Theory course before the practical Fast Track begins. We recommend an online theory pathway from Skippers Online or Ardent Training. The programme starts with RYA Competent Crew and RYA Day Skipper Practical before advancing through Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore theory, coastal-skipper development and sustained mile building.

Eleven development weeks are used to build experience towards 2,500 nautical miles through real passages, watchkeeping, night sailing, pilotage, passage planning and command practice. Training from Phuket Yacht Haven Marina makes use of the varied islands, tidal passages and changing conditions of the Andaman Sea, while routes remain flexible according to weather, safety and student development.

The final stage combines five days of focused Yachtmaster preparation with a two-day examination conducted by an independent RYA examiner. Before confirming the programme, the school reviews your existing certificates, logged mileage, theory progress and professional objectives, then provides an individual schedule and written quotation.

A shorter Yachtmaster Coastal pathway can also be planned. This normally takes around 10 weeks and targets approximately half of the full 2,500-nautical-mile Offshore programme, depending on your existing experience and logged sea time. The minimum examination age is 17 for Yachtmaster Coastal and 18 for Yachtmaster Offshore; all current RYA eligibility requirements are checked before an examination is arranged.

How your programme and price are planned

The Yachtmaster Fast Track is individually planned because existing certificates, logged mileage, theory progress and examination objectives can materially change the programme.

  • The standard pathway is based on 15 weeks of coordinated theory, practical training, mile building and Yachtmaster preparation
  • A Yachtmaster Coastal-focused pathway can normally be planned over approximately 10 weeks, with a school mileage target of around half the full 2,500-mile Offshore programme
  • Existing recognised certificates and properly documented sea time are reviewed before the schedule is prepared
  • Day Skipper Theory and Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory are booked separately with your selected provider
  • RYA examination, examiner logistics, medical, PPR and commercial endorsement costs remain separate unless included in writing
  • The school confirms the final sequence, inclusions and price in a written pathway proposal before requesting payment

If you have already completed Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper or relevant qualifying passages, the programme may be shortened after review by the Principal. Evidence is required, and any adjustment remains at the School’s discretion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I book the Yachtmaster Fast Track immediately online?

No. This is an individually planned 15-week pathway. The school first reviews your existing certificates, logged experience, theory progress, preferred dates and professional objectives, then sends a proposed schedule and written quotation before requesting payment.

Do I need previous sailing experience?

No previous experience is required for the complete pathway. It is intensive, however, and requires consistent study, active participation and a serious commitment to sustained development over repeated liveaboard sailing weeks.

Must I complete theory before arriving in Phuket?

Day Skipper Theory should be completed before the practical phase begins. Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory is also required during the pathway. Skippers Online and Ardent Training both offer combined online theory routes that are normally better value than purchasing the two theory courses separately.

Do all 15 weeks have to be consecutive?

Not necessarily. A continuous programme depends on yacht, instructor, theory, Mile Builder and examination availability. The school may divide the pathway into suitable blocks while preserving the correct progression and allowing adequate time to consolidate experience.

Can I follow a shorter Yachtmaster Coastal pathway?

Yes. We can normally plan a Yachtmaster Coastal-focused pathway of around 10 weeks, targeting approximately half of the full programme's 2,500-mile Offshore target. The final duration depends on your existing certificates and documented sea time. The minimum exam age is 17, and the school verifies the current RYA Coastal eligibility requirements before arranging an examination.

Does the programme guarantee 2,500 qualifying miles?

The pathway is designed to develop experience towards the Yachtmaster Offshore mileage requirement, but exact mileage and qualifying passages depend on weather, routing, operational conditions and the responsibilities you perform aboard. Your logbook is reviewed throughout, and the plan may be adjusted if a shortfall remains.

Is the Yachtmaster certificate guaranteed?

No. The final examination is conducted independently, and presentation for examination depends on meeting the current eligibility requirements and reaching the required practical standard. The instructor will give honest readiness feedback and may recommend further development before an examination is arranged.

Where do I stay during the programme?

Onboard accommodation is included during practical sailing weeks. Students arrange accommodation ashore during theory study, applicable weekends and any breaks between course blocks. We can recommend suitable options near Yacht Haven Marina and elsewhere in Phuket.

Does Yachtmaster automatically allow me to work commercially?

No. After gaining the appropriate Yachtmaster certificate, a commercial endorsement normally also requires PPR, an accepted medical certificate, the relevant sea survival or STCW evidence and a separate application to the RYA. We can help you understand the pathway, but final approval rests with the RYA.

Are examination and professional endorsement fees included?

Not by default. The RYA First Aid course is included, but Yachtmaster examination fees, examiner logistics, medical certification, PPR, STCW and commercial endorsement costs remain separate unless your written pathway quotation expressly includes them.
