Choosing the right first course is less about finding the most advanced certificate and more about starting at the level where you can learn confidently. Your previous time on boats, practical ability, navigation knowledge and immediate goal all matter.
Start with your real objective
Ask what you would like to be able to do after the course. You may want a short introduction, the confidence to join a yacht as useful crew, or the skills to take responsibility for a small cruising yacht by day.
| Your objective | A sensible starting point |
|---|---|
| Try sailing before committing to a full week | RYA Start Yachting |
| Become an active and dependable crew member | RYA Competent Crew |
| Progress toward skippering a yacht | Day Skipper pathway |
RYA Start Yachting
Start Yachting is a compact two-day introduction, usually held over a weekend. It suits complete beginners who want to experience steering, sail handling, basic ropework and the everyday movement of a cruising yacht without committing to a liveaboard week.
It is also useful for families, couples or groups who want a shared introduction to sailing. The course normally runs during the day, so accommodation aboard is not included.
RYA Competent Crew
Competent Crew is the strongest foundation for someone who wants to become genuinely useful aboard a sailing yacht. During the practical liveaboard week, you take part in steering, sail handling, lookout, ropework, safety routines and everyday life on board.
No previous sailing experience is required. The emphasis is participation: learning how a cruising yacht and its crew work together over several days rather than collecting isolated techniques.

The Day Skipper pathway
Day Skipper Practical is for aspiring skippers, not first-time passengers. Before starting, you should have basic sailing ability, approximately five days and 100 nautical miles of experience, including four night hours, and navigation knowledge to Day Skipper Theory standard.
If you are completely new, the coordinated Day Skipper Fast Track combines the earlier foundations and practical progression. If you already sail regularly, speak with the school so we can check whether your experience is suitable.
A quick decision guide
- Choose Start Yachting if you want a short introduction before deciding whether to continue.
- Choose Competent Crew if you are new and want the full practical foundation.
- Consider Day Skipper Practical only when you already meet the practical and theory prerequisites.
- Choose a Fast Track when you want a coordinated pathway and can commit the required time.
- Ask us before booking if your experience sits between levels.
