Course Overview
Tight berths, crosswinds and short-handed manoeuvres can create unnecessary stress even for otherwise confident sailors. This two-day clinic replaces guesswork with an understanding of how the yacht responds and a repeatable process for planning, briefing and controlling each manoeuvre.
You will explore how windage, prop walk, prop wash, rudder effect, momentum and line choice influence a cruising yacht. Instead of fighting those forces, the instructor shows how to anticipate and use them while retaining a safe abort plan.
Practical sessions can cover alongside, bows-to and stern-to approaches, springing on or off, controlled turns, reversing, short-handed methods and recovery from a poor approach. Repetition is central: the aim is to leave with techniques you can reproduce on your next charter or your own yacht.
Training normally takes place aboard a monohull sailing yacht at Phuket Yacht Haven Marina and nearby suitable water. Exercises are selected for the assigned yacht, actual conditions and participants rather than forced into a rigid sequence.
This is a Phuket Sea School practical skills-development clinic rather than a separate RYA certificate course. It is arranged by enquiry and normally delivered on a weekend.
Who Is This Course For?
Day Skipper-level sailors, new yacht owners, charterers, cruising couples, family crews, sailors returning after a break and Yachtmaster candidates wanting concentrated close-quarters practice.
Prerequisites
- Practical ability around RYA Day Skipper level is recommended
- Comfort moving safely around a yacht and handling lines
- Basic familiarity with engine controls, steering and normal marina procedures
- Experience, goals and preferred weekend reviewed before confirmation
Concentrated practical coaching
Replace marina anxiety with a repeatable plan
The aim is not to memorise a perfect manoeuvre. It is to understand what the yacht will do, prepare the crew and retain a safe way out when wind, space or timing changes.
Read the forces
Understand how windage, momentum, prop walk, prop wash and rudder effect change the yacht’s response ahead and astern.
Plan the manoeuvre
Assess space, wind, escape routes and abort points before briefing the crew and committing to the approach.
Use lines deliberately
Practise fore-and-aft springs, centre-line methods and windward lines to control the yacht rather than fight it.
Control the yacht astern
Build confidence reversing, turning within confined water and recovering when the first approach does not develop as planned.
Operate short-handed
Simplify the sequence, position the crew safely and choose techniques that still work with a couple or small family aboard.
Manage contingencies
Discuss engine failure, missed lines, excess speed and changing wind, then practise safe ways to stop, reset and try again.
Choose the right practical clinic
The clinics complement each other but solve different problems. Many sailors combine both weekends for concentrated control under power and sail.
| Compare | Boat Handling | Sail Handling |
|---|---|---|
| Primary focus | Marina handling and yacht control under power | Sail systems, trim and yacht control under sail |
| Typical setting | Berths, fairways and confined water | Open water, manoeuvring space and suitable anchorages |
| Core techniques | Prop walk, springs, close turns, astern control and short-handed berthing | Hoisting, reefing, trim, tacking, gybing and manoeuvres under sail |
| Best reason to attend | You sail confidently but marina arrivals still create stress | You can operate the sails but want cleaner technique and better performance |
| Recognition | Focused Phuket Sea School skills clinic; no separate RYA certificate | Focused Phuket Sea School skills clinic; no separate RYA certificate |
Typical Itinerary
The instructor builds the weekend around the assigned yacht, actual marina conditions and the manoeuvres that matter most to the group.
- Day 1 morning: yacht response assessment, controls, wind and prop effects, manoeuvre planning and crew briefs
- Day 1 afternoon: alongside approaches, stopping, reversing, controlled turns and effective use of springs
- Day 2 morning: bows-to or stern-to practice where suitable, short-handed line methods and windward departures
- Day 2 afternoon: participant-selected problem areas, contingency scenarios, repeated consolidation and individual debrief

A clinic shaped around your real problem
Tell us what currently causes concern and what yacht you normally sail. The instructor can then give useful priority to the situations you are likely to face after the course.
- A first charter with an unfamiliar yacht or berth
- Short-handed handling with a partner or family crew
- Reversing a prop-walk-prone monohull
- Crosswind approaches, springing off or narrow fairways
- Building precision before Yachtmaster preparation
No two yachts behave identically. The course teaches observation and decision-making as well as individual manoeuvres.
Weekend delivery
The course is arranged by enquiry and normally runs Saturday and Sunday. Onboard accommodation may occasionally be arranged in advance, subject to availability.
- Typical training hours are 09:30–17:00 each day
- Maximum four participants supports useful repetition and individual helm time
- The final exercise plan remains subject to weather, traffic, berth access and safety
Recommended to Bring
- RYA logbook and evidence of prerequisite sea time

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this an RYA certificate course?
No. It is a focused practical clinic designed to strengthen specific yacht-handling skills. We record the training in your logbook where appropriate.
How experienced do I need to be?
Practical ability around RYA Day Skipper level is recommended. You should already understand basic yacht controls and safe line handling so the weekend can concentrate on close-quarters development rather than first-time familiarisation.
Will we practise in the marina for both days?
Most exercises take place in or near a suitable marina environment because repetition is the purpose of the course. The instructor may use nearby open water to assess turning, stopping, prop walk or contingency techniques before returning to confined exercises.
Can I practise short-handed berthing?
Yes. Centre-line methods, windward lines, springs and simplified crew roles can be practised when suitable. Tell us whether you normally sail alone, as a couple or with family so we can make the exercises relevant.
Can you teach handling on my own yacht?
Yes, where the yacht, location, insurance and safety arrangements are suitable. Our Own Boat Tuition programme is normally the better format because the instructor can work with your yacht’s specific propeller, windage, controls and berth.
Will we practise stern-to mooring?
Stern-to and bows-to techniques may be included where berth access, traffic and conditions permit. The exact exercises depend on the assigned yacht and facilities available during the weekend.
What happens if the wind is very light?
Light conditions still allow valuable work on stopping distance, prop walk, springs, reversing, turning and crew routines. Strong-wind techniques can be planned and discussed, but they are never manufactured unsafely for the sake of completing a list.
Can I stay onboard?
Overnight accommodation is not included, but it may occasionally be arranged in advance subject to yacht availability and the written agreement.
How do I arrange a weekend?
Send an enquiry with your experience, preferred dates, group size and the manoeuvres you want to improve. We will confirm the yacht, instructor, weekend plan and complete quotation before requesting payment.
