Course Overview

RYA Day Skipper Theory gives aspiring skippers the knowledge needed to make sound decisions aboard a cruising yacht. It is the recommended theory preparation for RYA Day Skipper Practical and develops the background knowledge used to skipper a small vessel in familiar waters by day.

The course introduces coastal and inshore navigation, pilotage, chartwork, position fixing, course-to-steer calculations, weather forecasting, tides and the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea. You will also consider yacht construction, onboard equipment and essential safety procedures, including distress communications and the correct use of personal and emergency equipment.

Traditional chartwork is taught alongside modern electronic navigation. Exercises help you understand both the value and limitations of chartplotters and satellite-derived positions, while reinforcing the need to cross-check information and maintain situational awareness.

The RYA syllabus requires 40 hours of study plus exam time. We plan intensive five-day classroom delivery in Phuket when demand and instructor availability allow; the online route provides a more flexible alternative before travelling for your practical course.
