Course Overview
Personal watercraft are fast, responsive and exhilarating, but safe riding depends on far more than using the throttle. This course develops the control, observation and judgement needed to operate responsibly while understanding the limitations of both rider and craft.
The day begins with protective equipment, controls, pre-use checks, riding position and the relationship between throttle and steering. Practical exercises then progress from low-speed control and stopping to turns, higher-speed handling, collision avoidance and orientation at sea where conditions permit.
You also cover launching and recovery principles, simple passage planning, weather, local restrictions, emergency action, environmental sensitivity and courtesy toward swimmers, vessels and other water users.
Delivery is currently enquiry-led while Phuket Sea School validates demand and confirms suitable craft, operating areas, instructor availability and RYA delivery arrangements.

What you will work toward
- Select protective equipment and complete safe pre-use checks
- Launch, recover, start and stop a PWC using the agreed procedures
- Control direction, speed, posture and balance at low and higher speeds
- Understand throttle-dependent steering and allow a safe stopping distance
- Apply collision-avoidance, lookout, courtesy and environmental principles
- Plan a simple trip, remain oriented and respond to common emergencies
- Recognise when conditions, location or personal ability make riding unsuitable
From control to confident riding
The practical exercises are progressive. Accuracy, observation and a stable riding position come before speed.
- Learn how throttle affects steering and why releasing it can reduce directional control
- Build smooth low-speed control before increasing speed or turn rate
- Practise scanning, safe spacing and early decisions around hazards and other users
- Use posture, balance and measured inputs to keep the craft settled and predictable
Higher-speed exercises only take place when the rider, craft, operating area and conditions are suitable.
Safety, courtesy and the operating area
Responsible PWC operation includes the people and environment around you—not only control of the machine.
- Maintain an effective lookout and avoid swimmers, divers, anchored craft and congested areas
- Control speed and wash near shorelines, wildlife, moorings and other water users
- Check local rules, weather, fuel, daylight and safe return options before departure
- Know when to stop riding because conditions or fatigue have increased the risk
Proficiency course or yacht safety briefing?
The full RYA Personal Watercraft Proficiency Course is a one-day course with practical training, background knowledge and continuous assessment. It is different from the shorter Introduction to Personal Watercraft Safety certificate sometimes delivered to guests aboard recognised superyachts.
- Choose the full proficiency course when you want a complete personal qualification
- A yacht-based safety briefing is narrower and linked to operation from that particular yacht
- Delivery from a private yacht can only be confirmed after its recognition, craft, insurance, instructor and operating arrangements have been checked
Certificate and ICC
Candidates who demonstrate the required standard receive the full RYA Personal Watercraft Proficiency certificate.
- The certificate records completion of the one-day proficiency course
- It may be used as evidence when an eligible person applies separately for the relevant ICC category
- Local law, hire-company rules, insurance and operating restrictions still apply wherever you ride
The course certificate does not replace local permission, registration, insurance or an ICC where one is required.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the course suitable for a first-time Jet Ski rider?
Yes. It begins with familiarisation and develops control progressively. More experienced riders also benefit from structured safety, navigation and emergency practice.
Can a 12-year-old attend?
The minimum age is 12. Candidates aged 12–16 must ride under the supervision of a responsible adult and any certificate restrictions will be explained before booking.
Do I need to own a Jet Ski?
No. The proposed price includes use of the nominated training PWC and required safety equipment. We confirm the exact craft, operating area and delivery arrangements in writing before payment.
Is this the same as a short superyacht guest briefing?
No. This page describes the full one-day RYA Personal Watercraft Proficiency Course. A recognised superyacht training centre may offer a shorter Introduction to Personal Watercraft Safety certificate for operation from that particular yacht, but it is a different course and certificate.
Can the course be delivered from a private yacht?
Only where the yacht, training-centre recognition, PWC, insurance, instructor and operating arrangements meet the relevant requirements. Send the yacht and location details and we will confirm what is possible rather than assuming onboard delivery.
Is the certificate guaranteed?
No certificate is automatic. The instructor assesses practical control, safety awareness and decision-making throughout the day. Candidates who complete the syllabus and demonstrate the required standard receive the course certificate.
Can the certificate support an ICC application?
It may be used as evidence for the relevant ICC application when the applicant is eligible. The ICC is a separate application and does not replace local licensing, registration, hire or insurance requirements.
What happens if weather affects the course?
PWC training needs a suitable operating area and safe conditions. We may change the sequence, limit higher-speed exercises or reschedule delivery if the conditions would compromise safety or the required training quality.
Are dates available now?
Dates are arranged by enquiry while the programme is being validated. Tell us the number and ages of riders and your preferred period so we can confirm the arrangements.
