Course Overview
RYA Powerboat Level 2 develops the practical skills and background knowledge needed to drive a small open powerboat safely by day in suitable conditions. It is a hands-on course for complete beginners and existing users who want to replace trial-and-error habits with a calm, structured approach.
You learn how the boat responds ahead and astern, how wind and current affect a manoeuvre, and how to prepare the boat and crew before committing. Repeated close-quarters practice develops control when leaving, coming alongside, turning in confined water, anchoring and securing to a buoy.
Once the basics are secure, training progresses to safe-speed decisions, planing-speed handling where the craft and conditions permit, collision avoidance, basic pilotage and recovery of a person overboard. The instructor adapts the exercises to the nominated craft, operating area and candidate progress.
The course is enquiry-led while Phuket Sea School validates demand and confirms a suitable powerboat, instructor and delivery dates. We review your age, experience and intended use before offering a place.
Who Is This Course For?
New powerboat drivers, yacht-tender users, RIB and dive-boat crew, leisure-boat owners, returning drivers and anyone wanting a stronger foundation before an ICC application or further training.
Prerequisites
- No previous powerboat experience required
- Minimum age 12; certificates for younger candidates may carry an age-related endorsement
- Reasonable mobility, confidence being on the water and ability to follow safety instructions
- Tell us if you want private or own-boat tuition so the craft, insurance and operating arrangements can be checked
Typical Itinerary
The exact sequence follows weather, traffic, launch arrangements and candidate progress.
- Day 1 morning: safety equipment, craft checks, controls, crew briefing and progressive low-speed handling
- Day 1 afternoon: confined turns, wind and current effects, leaving and coming alongside
- Day 2 morning: anchoring, securing to a buoy, pilotage and person-overboard recovery
- Day 2 afternoon: planing-speed work where appropriate, emergency considerations, consolidation and debrief

- Towing principles and action following engine or steering problems
- Collision regulations, lookout, courtesy, local rules and environmental awareness

- Using GPS or electronic aids without losing visual awareness

Control before speed
Confident powerboat handling starts with observation, preparation and low-speed accuracy. The course builds each skill progressively before adding speed or complexity.
- Understand how the nominated craft reacts ahead, astern and during a turn
- Use wind, current and momentum in the plan rather than correcting at the last moment
- Brief the crew, prepare lines and fenders and retain a safe escape option
- Repeat practical manoeuvres until the process becomes calm and predictable
The exact exercises depend on the craft, traffic, weather and safe access to suitable training water.
Certificate, ICC and intended use
Candidates who complete the course to the required standard receive an RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate endorsed for the type of craft used during training.
- The certificate is a common foundation for leisure powerboat and tender operation
- It may support an ICC application for an eligible applicant and category; the ICC application remains a separate process
- Apply for an ICC through the RYA after checking the current eligibility and evidence requirements
- Commercial work may require a Commercial Endorsement and additional medical, sea-survival, radio or operating qualifications
- Read the RYA commercial endorsement guidance before planning a professional pathway
- Larger craft, offshore passages, night operation and local licensing rules may require further training or certification

Private groups and own-boat training
The programme may be arranged for a private group or on a suitable customer-owned powerboat after the delivery arrangements have been reviewed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a complete beginner take Powerboat Level 2?
Yes. No previous experience is required. We ask about your intended use so the practical exercises can be made relevant to you.
Are lunch, drinks and fuel included?
A simple lunch, drinking water, tea and coffee are included on both training days. Breakfast, dinner, soft drinks, alcohol, snacks and additional personal provisions are not included. Tell us about any food allergies or dietary requirements before the course. Fuel and normal operating costs for the school-supplied training craft are also included.
Can the certificate support an ICC application?
An eligible RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate can support an ICC application for the relevant category, but eligibility and the application itself are separate. We will explain the current requirements before you book.
What type of powerboat will appear on my certificate?
The certificate is endorsed for the type of craft used during the course, such as a planing craft. We confirm the nominated training boat and the expected endorsement before taking payment.
Does Powerboat Level 2 qualify me for commercial work?
Not by itself for every role or operating area. A commercially endorsed certificate may be appropriate in some circumstances, but medical, sea-survival, radio, mileage and local requirements can also apply. Tell us the work you have in mind so we can give accurate pathway guidance.
Can I train on my own boat?
Potentially yes. Send us the boat details, location and intended use. We must confirm that the craft, insurance, safety equipment, instructor and certification arrangements are suitable before agreeing delivery.
Is the course mainly classroom-based?
No. It is a practical two-day course taught primarily on the water. Short briefings cover safety, collision regulations, weather, tides and pilotage before those ideas are applied during the practical exercises.
What happens if weather affects the plan?
The instructor changes the sequence, operating area or exercises to protect safety and learning quality. Planing-speed work and exposed-water exercises only take place when the craft and conditions are suitable.
