Course Overview
This practical clinic helps sailors move beyond simply getting the sails up and down. It develops efficient routines, clearer crew communication and a stronger understanding of how sail shape affects balance, speed, helm load and control.
The weekend links each adjustment to what you can see and feel: tell-tales, heel, weather helm, acceleration and changing pressure. You will practise organising the crew and controlling load during hoists, drops, reefs, tacks, gybes and sail changes rather than treating sail trim as isolated theory.
Exercises may include person-overboard recovery under sail, approaching a mooring buoy or anchorage under sail, rudderless balance, rig awareness and heavy-weather preparation. Spinnaker work is included only when the assigned yacht, equipment, conditions and group make it safe and genuinely useful.
Phuket’s warm water and variable tropical conditions make the emphasis practical and adaptable. We use the available wind rather than promise a fixed list of advanced manoeuvres regardless of conditions.
This is a Phuket Sea School skills-development clinic rather than a separate RYA certificate course. It is arranged by enquiry and normally delivered on a weekend.
Who Is This Course For?
Day Skipper-level sailors, cruising couples, yacht owners, club or race crew moving into cruising roles, Mile Builder participants and Yachtmaster candidates wanting more deliberate sail-handling practice.
Prerequisites
- Practical sailing ability around RYA Day Skipper level is recommended
- Basic understanding of tacking, gybing and sail controls
- Ability to move safely around a yacht under sail
- Experience, goals and any priority sail systems reviewed before confirmation
Concentrated practical coaching
Turn sail handling into a coordinated system
The aim is not simply to make the yacht move faster. It is to handle sails safely, reduce unnecessary load and understand how trim choices affect control, comfort and performance.
Build clean routines
Organise safe, efficient hoists, reefs, sail changes, drops and flaking with clear roles from cockpit to foredeck.
See and shape the sail
Use tell-tales, draft, twist, traveller and headsail-car position to connect each adjustment with balance and speed.
Tack and gybe smoothly
Coordinate helm, sheets and crew so manoeuvres preserve control, minimise load and finish with the yacht properly trimmed.
Reef and depower early
Choose the right sail plan, reduce weather helm and maintain a safe, comfortable yacht as tropical conditions change.
Manoeuvre under sail
Practise speed control, person-overboard recovery and approaches to a buoy or anchorage without relying immediately on power.
Understand the rig
Review standing and running rigging, load, chafe and early warning signs so small issues are identified before they become failures.
Choose the right practical clinic
The clinics complement each other but solve different problems. Many sailors combine both weekends for concentrated control under power and sail.
| Compare | Boat Handling | Sail Handling |
|---|---|---|
| Primary focus | Marina handling and yacht control under power | Sail systems, trim and yacht control under sail |
| Typical setting | Berths, fairways and confined water | Open water, manoeuvring space and suitable anchorages |
| Core techniques | Prop walk, springs, close turns, astern control and short-handed berthing | Hoisting, reefing, trim, tacking, gybing and manoeuvres under sail |
| Best reason to attend | You sail confidently but marina arrivals still create stress | You can operate the sails but want cleaner technique and better performance |
| Recognition | Focused Phuket Sea School skills clinic; no separate RYA certificate | Focused Phuket Sea School skills clinic; no separate RYA certificate |
Typical Itinerary
The training sequence is adapted to the yacht, available sails, wind, sea state and participant priorities.
- Day 1 morning: rig and sail checks, safe hoisting and lowering routines, crew roles and baseline trim

- Final skills review, logbook update and personal practice priorities
What you will improve
- Organise mainsail and headsail handling more safely and efficiently
- Read tell-tales and sail shape instead of trimming by habit
- Improve balance, helm feel and boat-speed control
- Coordinate cleaner tacks, gybes, reefs and sail changes
- Choose when to reef or depower before the yacht becomes overloaded
- Build confidence in person-overboard recovery and precision manoeuvres under sail
- Recognise rigging wear, excess load and unsafe foredeck routines earlier
From cruising efficiency to advanced control
The clinic starts with the sail-handling routines every cruising crew needs, then adds more advanced exercises only when the group, equipment and conditions are ready.
- Improve everyday hoists, drops, reefs, tacks and gybes before chasing extra speed
- Connect trim controls with heel, helm balance, comfort and performance
- Practise manoeuvres under sail with a clear safety plan and defined crew roles
- Explore spinnaker, rudderless balance or heavy-weather techniques where appropriate
- Finish with settings and drills you can reproduce on your own or charter yacht
Advanced exercises are opportunities, not guarantees. Safe core technique and useful repetition take priority over completing an impressive list.
Weekend delivery
The course is arranged by enquiry and normally runs Saturday and Sunday. Onboard accommodation may occasionally be arranged in advance, subject to availability.
- Typical training hours are 09:30–17:00 each day

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Sail Handling an RYA certificate course?
No. It is a focused Phuket Sea School practical clinic for existing sailors. It strengthens techniques used across the RYA cruising scheme but does not issue a separate RYA certificate.
How experienced do I need to be?
Practical sailing ability around RYA Day Skipper level is recommended. You should understand basic tacking, gybing and sail controls and be able to move safely around a yacht under sail.
Will we use a spinnaker?
Only when the yacht, equipment, wind and candidate experience make it appropriate. Core sail handling and safe yacht control take priority.
Will we practise sailing onto a mooring or anchoring under sail?
These exercises may be included when the location, traffic, yacht and conditions provide a safe training opportunity. The instructor may first break the manoeuvre into speed-control and approach exercises in open water.
Is the course about racing performance?
The main focus is safe, efficient cruising technique. Better trim normally improves speed as well, and more advanced performance work can be included when it supports the participants’ goals and does not displace core handling practice.
What happens if there is very little wind?
We use available conditions for rig checks, safe routines, sail-shape theory, light-air trim and crew coordination. If the forecast would prevent meaningful practical delivery, the school will discuss alternatives rather than pretend the full programme can be completed normally.
Can the instructor focus on the sails or rig used on my yacht?
Yes. Tell us the yacht, rig type, sails and problems you experience. For training aboard your own yacht, our Own Boat Tuition programme may be more useful because the coaching can use your exact equipment and control layout.
Is this useful before Yachtmaster preparation?
Yes. Concentrated sail handling, person-overboard recovery, reefing and crew leadership can expose weak routines before Yachtmaster Preparation & Exam. It does not replace the required experience, theory or formal preparation programme.
Can I stay onboard?
Overnight accommodation is not included, but it may occasionally be arranged in advance subject to yacht availability and the written agreement.
How do I arrange a weekend?
Send an enquiry with your experience, preferred dates, group size and the sail-handling skills you want to improve. We will confirm the yacht, instructor, likely exercise plan and complete quotation before requesting payment.
