At Phuket Sea School, our aim is to combine serious RYA training with the pleasure of sailing in Thailand. These are the 16 reasons behind that approach—and what they mean when you join us for your first course.

1. Thailand's only RYA Sail Cruising school

Phuket Sea School is currently Thailand's only RYA-recognised training centre offering the RYA Sail Cruising scheme. That gives sailors who want to train in Thailand a local starting point within the RYA sail-cruising pathway.

The distinction is specifically Sail Cruising: learning aboard a cruising sailing yacht. It does not mean that other RYA disciplines are unavailable elsewhere in Thailand. For your own journey, the useful question is which sailing course fits your experience and ambitions.

2. Recognised training backed by sailing experience

Our school brings together RYA-recognised training and more than 30 years of sailing experience. That is sailing experience behind the teaching, not a claim that Phuket Sea School has been operating for 30 years.

Chief Instructor Steve Miller is an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor Sail and Shorebased Theory Instructor. You can meet the team before booking. For a new sailor, experienced instruction should mean more than impressive credentials: it should help connect a demonstration to the situations you will encounter aboard.

3. Small groups that keep you involved

Our sail-cruising training groups have a maximum of five students. A small crew gives you opportunities to participate, ask questions and learn from one another, rather than spend your course watching from the sidelines.

You take part in the work of sailing: helming, handling sails, working with lines and keeping a lookout at the level appropriate to your course. Come as an individual, a couple or a group; you do not need to organise a whole crew before making an enquiry.

4. An international destination that is practical to reach

Phuket's international airport makes it possible to combine sailing training with a trip to Thailand. Depending on your departure point and dates, you can compare direct flights with connections through regional or international hubs.

Our base is at Yacht Haven Marina in northern Phuket. Start with our travel guidance, then coordinate your flight and transfer with the joining arrangements for your chosen course. Airline schedules change, so check the journey for your actual travel dates rather than relying on a fixed route list.

5. A genuinely international sailing community

Our students come from Europe, Asia, the Pacific and the Americas. You may arrive from different countries and professional backgrounds, but aboard the yacht you share the same practical tasks and learning experience.

For a solo traveller, that shared purpose can be a particularly appealing way to spend time abroad. There is no need to arrive with a sailing partner. The mix of people varies with each departure; what matters is being willing to contribute, ask questions and be considerate of the other people aboard.

6. Straightforward online booking and clear payment arrangements

You can compare published departures in the course calendar and continue to the booking form for your selected course. Where a deposit option is available, the checkout explains the required payment and when the balance is due.

We keep the current figures in the booking process and terms and conditions, so you do not have to rely on an old blog price or deadline. A booking becomes binding when the required payment is received and the school issues written confirmation; sending an enquiry alone does not reserve a place.

7. Value in the whole learning experience

The value of a sailing course is not just its headline price. Consider the amount of practical training, group size, accommodation and everyday costs included in the programme.

Our Competent Crew course, for example, combines practical tuition with liveaboard accommodation and specified onboard meals and essentials. Other courses have different arrangements. Comparing the published inclusions and exclusions helps you plan the full trip—and choose the experience that matters to you—without assuming everything is included.

8. A tidal cruising area that makes learning relevant

Phuket lies on Thailand's Andaman coast, with our base opening towards Phang Nga Bay and the surrounding cruising waters. Tides, passages and pilotage give practical context to the skills you develop as you progress.

At the appropriate course level, you can discuss boat handling, including stern-to mooring where relevant, and how local conditions affect decisions aboard. Border formalities belong to suitable international passages, not every beginner's course. Your instructor selects exercises and routes for your course, the conditions and the crew—not a fixed sightseeing itinerary.

9. Fast Track options for a bigger sailing ambition

If you have time for a longer programme, we offer Day Skipper Fast Track, Coastal Skipper Fast Track and Yachtmaster Fast Track options. These are different pathways with different starting requirements, not interchangeable packages for complete beginners.

For Day Skipper Fast Track, Day Skipper Theory is arranged separately, is excluded from the package price and must be completed before joining the practical programme in Phuket. 10. Comfortable cruising yachts that are also practical classrooms

Learning aboard a cruising yacht helps you understand more than the sails. The cockpit, cabins, galley and onboard systems become part of your introduction to life afloat.

Our RYA-coded training yachts combine cruising facilities with navigation and safety equipment for practical tuition. The training-yacht profiles show the boats, layouts and facilities, including electronic navigation equipment and air conditioning on the relevant vessel. Check the yacht allocated to your course and the arrangements for air-conditioning use. A comfortable boat is an important part of a liveaboard week, but it does not mean every booking includes a private cabin or every optional service.

11. A school base with people to support your visit

We have an office and dedicated classroom at Phuket Yacht Haven Marina, rather than only a meeting point at a yacht. This gives you a place to connect with the school before and after going afloat.

The classroom supports briefings, preparation and selected shorebased teaching, while Base Manager Daisy Yan coordinates client care and local support. Questions about luggage, arrival or your course arrangements have a school team behind them. That can make preparing for a first sailing trip feel much more manageable.

12. Reasons to keep sailing beyond a certificate

The destination, passage demands and entry expectations matter more than choosing the longest trip. 13. Tropical surroundings that make the trip memorable

Thailand brings another dimension to a sailing course: island scenery, beaches, local food and the opportunity to spend time ashore before or after training. For many visitors, learning a new skill becomes the centrepiece of a wider holiday.

Phuket has a tropical setting throughout the year, but conditions are not the same every month. Wind, rain and sea state influence the sailing plan. 14. Clear teaching that helps things make sense

Good instruction makes room for the question you might otherwise be too embarrassed to ask. Our approach is to explain sailing in plain English, demonstrate practical skills and help you understand why a task matters.

You do not need to arrive fluent in nautical terminology. Come ready to listen, participate and ask for an explanation when you need one. We want you to leave with understanding you can build on, not simply a collection of phrases you learnt for the course.

15. Liveaboard essentials that help you travel lighter

Prepared bedding and one onboard towel are included on our liveaboard courses. Those small details make packing easier, particularly if sailing is one part of a longer trip. Bring your own separate beach towel and use the joining instructions for the rest of your packing list.

16. A relaxed, non-smoking community—and a next step that fits

Our school and training yacht are non-smoking environments. We aim for a friendly atmosphere in which people can concentrate on learning, enjoy each other's company and feel comfortable asking for advice.

We also want the relationship to continue beyond one booking. You can ask about further practice, suitable courses and future sailing opportunities, and choose to hear about offers. The right next step might be another qualification, a Mile Builder or simply consolidating what you have learnt. It should fit your goals, not pressure you into a bigger programme.
